Sample projects

Below are some examples of projects that may help trigger some ideas for your YCAS activities.

Do you have a light? – Collège Charlemagne

Smoke-Free Parks – Le Centre Bon Courage

The GARM’s social action

Roughly 100 teens from different high schools in Greater Montreal came together to protest against the tobacco industry’s marketing tactics. The teens, representing the Montreal Region YCAS group (GARM), launched a petition asking the Québec government to require neutral packaging for tobacco products, making them less attractive to teens and future consumers.

Resisting temptation — Collège Charlemagne

A video produced by students from the school, saying what they think about cigarettes and smoking. It’s quite an achievement!

Youth Coalition Against Smoking Advisory Network intervention

The 16 members of the 2008-2009 Youth Coalition Against Smoking Advisory Network ended their two —year term of office with a flourish, organizing a media event as part of the 2009 Quebec Tobacco-Free Week. The event, entitled “Don’t be taken in”, took place at the Café Théâtre in Montreal’s Place des Arts, in front of media representatives and an audience of roughly 100 teens. It included a dynamic scenario highlighting the number of young tobacco victims in Québec’s various regions, along with the dangers faced by thousands of other teens as a result of systematic solicitation by the tobacco industry.

École secondaire de l’Achigan, St-Roch de l’Achigan

A highly original project in which students from the school produced a program and demonstration against smoking to promote cleanliness and healthy lifestyle habits. Good work!

Say It Loud! social action

Social action in downtown Montreal, in which teens demonstrated against flavoured cigarillos in the wake of the Say It Loud! campaign.

Maison des jeunes d’Alma Inc.

A play modelled on the program entitled Dieu Merci in 2009. A very original project that required a great deal of hard work!

Say It Loud! Forum

Teens from Montreal denounced fruit-flavoured cigarillos and asked for more stringent regulations governing cigarillo sales!

A YCAS in Nunavik!

A Youth Coalition Against Smoking was set up in a very remote community of Québec that has the province’s highest percentage of smokers. This was a terrific initiative that continues to produce results. See:

Collaboration between the École secondaire aux Quatre Vents and the Bonaventure Youth Centre

This joint initiative produced several interesting spin-offs, including a vox pop and a play. Great work!
